Digital Retinal Photography
Digital Retinal photography is used to better document, monitor and educate our patients on their eye conditions. Stonewire Optometry offers high-resolution digital retinal photography that allows you to see what your optometrist sees when they perform your eye exam.
Digital Retinal photography provides a long-term record of your eye health and can be referenced at a later date.
We feel that retinal photography helps our patients to visualize and better understand their eye care condition.
Certain eye conditions that may require retinal photography include diabetes, high blood pressure, age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma, optic nerve disease, retinal degenerations, retinal lesions and retinal detachments.
To capture these images we use the latest digital retinal imaging technology by Nidek. The Nidek retinal imagining system provides for improved image quality, as the equipment uses an advanced 3-D eye-tracking system. This system allows our optometric assistants to quickly capture clear retinal photographs on nearly every patient. Most retinal photographs can be obtained without the use of dilating eye drops.
The other benefit of digital retinal photography is that it offers true colour, which is different than our Optomap ultra-widefield retinal imaging which uses composite colours.
Retinal photography is covered by Alberta Health Care once a year if your optometrist deems it medically necessary for the documentation or monitoring of an eye condition. If additional retinal photography is required, or you wish to add retinal photography to your routine eye exam to better understand your eye health, regular exam fees will apply. The staff and doctors at Stonewire Optometry will explain all costs before performing any additional testing procedures.
